Interactive Storytelling

There are many ways to tell a story if your subject matter calls you to do so.

1. Using a big book.

2. Using a TV roll or an improvised TV.

3. Using technologies like Television or better, Powerpoint Presentation.

4.Using puppets.

5. Using the latest way of telling a story- through Interactive Story Telling.

Songbook

During my practice teaching, I found it useful to have a notebook or compilation of children songs ready at hand. Why? If a teacher was absent in a particular subject, it was my responsibility to take care of the class. To avoid the class in producing noise, I let them sing songs. I wrote the song on the board and I taught it to them with matching actions. Public elementary school students really liked singing songs, especially educational songs. For instance, "Every Single Cell," "There's a Hole," Looby Loo," "It's Our Science Time," and the like.

It became students favorites when I started introducing songs in Filipino, like:

Mag-isip Isip

Mag-isip isip ng isa, dalawa, tatlo 3X
Sundan niyo ako
Sundan, sundan niyo 3X
Ikaw naman dito.

Ang Ulan
(The class sings the song whenever it rains.)

Kung ang ulan ay parang tsokolate
Oh! Kay sarap ng ulan
Ako'y lalabas at ako'y magnganganga
aaaaaaaaaaa
eeeeeeeeeee
iiiiiiiiiii
ooooooooooo
uuuuuuuuuuu
Oh! Kay sarap ng ulan!

The singing became even more exciting after I started teaching songs in the vernacular, like:

Singko Chikading
(5 Birds)
(A song I often used as a starter in Math.)

Chene singko chikading
Ya para na rama
Ya kay el uno
Kwatro ya lang ya keda
Chikading, chikading, tabula bula 2X

...
Tres ya lang ya keda
...
Dos ya lang ya keda
...
Uno ya lang ya keda
...
Nuway mas ya keda
Chikading, chikading, tabula bula 2X

Alegre Kita
(We are Happy)

Alegre kita aqui
Alegre kita alya
Maskin donde donde
Alegre Kita
(Repeat)

Mobe mobe el mano
Menya menya kadera
Bayla bayla un poco
Des pues bira

La, la, la, la, la

Des pues sinta.
(Repeat from the beginning)

LESSON: A teacher must always be ready and equipped.

Questions:
1. What if you ran out of songs? Easy! Search the internet. Look into books. Ask your colleagues. Do professional sharing.
2. I am so tired. I have something else to do. What can I do? That's easy. Ask the class to contribute songs in your class list of songs. I tell you, they will be eager to impart. But, have a reward system for this like giving extra points or using incentive chart. Trust me- I am talking from experience. You will be amazed with children whom you do not expect to contribute, but will donate.

Passing of Papers

When I had my off-campus practice teaching, I was assigned to teach Grade 5 Mathematics. Usually, the evaluation is Paper & Pencil Test (I said usually, not all the time. You can also use authentic or performance-based assessment). After the test, I normally tell the class this command, "Class, pens up. Pass your papers to the center aisle. Pass your papers forward. Do it silently." Sounds familiar? lol. Anyway, as I was doing this very often, one student of mine had ingeniously created a song. One day, as I was going to say the same command in passing the papers, the class sang this song. I was in for a shock.

Pass Your Papers
(In the tune of M-A-T-H)
Pass your papers 2X
Center Aisle 2X
Pass your papers forward 2X
Silently, Silently
(Repeat)

Lesson: Make all opportunities in the learning process fun and creative, just like putting a song in a typical passing of papers. Another lesson, praise students for expected and even unexpected job well done. That is what I did.  This boy(sorry I forgot the name) who composed the song was not that good in Math that time. But when he did something extraordinary, I gave him all the praise he deserves. Aside from praising him, I declared to the class to sing this song whenever they pass their papers. The class enjoyed the experience.

Tips and Tricks of Teaching

Hello everyone. I am your Guardian Teacher. I am here to talk about the life of teaching. If you are a teacher, or a would-be, then I believe that you will also agree with me when I say that it is NOT EASY to teach, right? (Right!) I know. I created this blog for the purpose of sharing thoughts of teaching, be it tips or tricks that I have used in class and finding it effective. Once in a while, I will be posting tips so that- if you want to- you can also use it in order to have variety in your instruction. Teachers are professionals with many masks, namely: teachers, instructors, inventors, painters, singers, dancers, actors/ actresses, and the like. I hope you will find this blog useful as I really intend to help. If you have the time, you can also post your suggestions. I have always believed in the saying, "Two heads are better than one." Let's have healthy and educational conversations. You learn from me, and I learn from you. Sounds like a plan?

Take care! More Power. God bless and be educated. Of course, enjoy. Teaching is a right path. Go Educators.
